WJEC Vocational Award Constructing the Built Environment Level 1/2

LO3 Be able to use construction processes in completion of construction tasks AC3.1 Apply techniques in completion of construction tasks • Check consistency of pattern. • Check for faded textiles. Have they been left in the sun? • Grease marks? • Oil marks? • Is the material creased too much (beyond ironing)? TOP MUST DO’S ✓ Always follow your cutting RAMS. ✓ Use clean tools and cutters. ✓ Check your textile up-close and from afar. ✓ Select a low maintenance material that does not require specialist cleaning. Textiles 1 Visual checks for defects: • Always work the fabric on large work-surfaces that are clear of other materials. • Use sharp fabric-type tailor’s chalks for marking and setting out. • Ensure your fabric is free of creases and bubbles/waves/ripples before you measure. • Use a solid fixed rule where possible for measuring and marking. • Use a flexible tape as a secondary means to measure textiles. • Always check the fixing capabilities of your chosen textiles; consider if they can be adhered/glued/pinned or stapled prior to selection. • Textiles should have consistent and uniform weave/texture. • Textiles should have a consistent pattern/symmetry. • Consider if the pattern or weave can be joined. 2 Dimensional checks for accuracy: 4 Setting out to ensure accuracy and quality: • Textiles should always be stored on a roll or folded into large squares. • Always store textiles out of direct sunlight. • Always inspect the full length of material when it is removed from stores or purchased. • Textiles should be stored off the floor and out of any damp draughts. • Textiles should not be exposed to damp environments. 3 Organising materials for safety and productivity: KEY TERM RAMS: Risk assessment and methods statement; term used in the construction industry referring to two key documents that are needed to be approved by the site manager prior to starting work. 92 Unit 2 Developing Construction Projects
