UNIT 1 CHANGING AWARENESS OF CRIME • DRIVING FORCES : think of how the campaign came about – a tragic event? Politically motivated? Are individuals or organisations the key driving forces behind it? Is it a national or local campaign? • METHODS/MEDIA : link together those who used similar methods and those who did not. Which campaigns used celebrities to endorse them and which did not? Social media? Newspapers and petitions? • SUCCESS : compare the success of the campaigns for change. Which ones were successful? How do we know they were a success? Give examples of outcomes from the successful campaigns. Were some a partial success/ongoing? Use statistics or evidence where appropriate. Remember, feel free to add other comparison points. How to improve your comparison Sample 1 – ‘Purpose’ paragraph Purpose Sarah’s law involved a family who campaigned for legal changes regarding sex offenders. In 2000, Sarah Payne was abducted while playing with her siblings. She had been abducted and murdered by a man who lived close by, named Roy Whiting. A significant police search had started to find Sarah Payne, aged eight, and her mother and father were involved in several media conferences and on television, appealing for anyone to help find their daughter. Sarah Payne’s body was found and it was confirmed that she was murdered. Roy Whiting was questioned shortly after her disappearance as he was on the Sex Offenders Register and he was eventually charged with her abduction and murder. Sarah’s parents had started the campaign that information about sex offenders living in the area should be made available to allow parents to protect their children. There is a version similar in the US called Megan’s law. The News of the World supported the campaign and ran a ‘naming and shaming’ campaign as well as a petition. Sample answer Controlled assessment tip Remember, for the controlled assessment, if you wish to achieve 8–10 marks, you MUST include ‘explicit links’ to your own ‘planned campaign’. This refers to the campaign you will be planning and designing in learning outcomes AC3.1 and AC3.2. Make sure you draw comparisons between your own planned campaign and the existing campaigns for change as you work your way through the paragraph structure. Don’t forget that you should be considering similarities as well as differences. 28
