Social, emotional and intellectual well-being are all part of the holistic approach to health. Health can be defined using a positive approach (being fit, feeling good) or a negative approach (not being unwell). A life event is an experience that affects a person’s development in a positive or negative way. Life events can be expected or unexpected and can have positive or negative effects on a person’s development and well-being. Examples of life events include birth of a sibling, parenthood, starting and ending school, beginning and retiring from work, getting married or divorced, moving home, experiencing illness, bereavement or disability. The holistic approach views physical and mental health as being very closely connected and part of a ‘whole person’ approach to health. Early intervention and preventative approaches aim to limit the impact of health and social problems. Preventative approaches in health care include vaccination, immunisation and screening programmes and providing information and support about healthy lifestyles. Summary 75 Life events:
