The WJEC GCSE Health and Social Care, and Childcare specification The WJEC GCSE Health and Social Care, and Childcare course is designed to provide you with the knowledge, understanding and skills related to caring for and supporting individuals in Wales from birth to late adulthood. The specification will enable you to recognise that there are varying influences on growth, development, behaviour and well- being and that individuals using support services have individual abilities and physical, intellectual, emotional and social needs. The course aims to help you to understand how current service provision in Wales meets the needs of its population and how this might need to change throughout the 21st century in order to continue to meet those needs. The WJEC GCSE in Health and Social Care, and Childcare can be studied as a single or double award and the structure is summarised below: Single award The single award comprises Units 1 and 2: Unit Assessment 1: Human growth, development and well-being 40% of single award qualification 20% of double award qualification Written examination: 1 hour 30 minutes 80 marks 2: Promoting and maintaining health and well-being 60% of single award qualification 30% of double award qualification Non-Exam Assessment: Approximately 25 hours 120 marks Unit 2 is assessed through two tasks relating to a service provision (40%) and the promotion and maintenance of health and well-being (60%).
