WJEC/Eduqas Media Studies for A Level Yr 2 & A2:SB

The student used visuals including on-screen graphics to illustrate the differing representations of young people and how they view themselves. This also establishes a style for the documentary, which reflects the target audience of 16–34 year olds. This is consistent throughout the sequence and these shots are intercut with shots of the school. Close-ups create a relationship between the pupil, the off-screen interviewer and the audience. An expectation is created that the audience will experience a day in the life of the students that will be positive rather than negative. The student also employs a minimalist style for the on-screen information, linking to the younger target audience. Relevant industry information is included, comprising the programme title and names of key personnel as required by the brief. Cross-Media Elements An option in this sample brief is to create a functioning website promoting the new television programme and including a working homepage and one other linked page. While the student work featured here is not for the same programme as the audio-visual extract, this website for a television drama does include some of the requirements of the sample brief and is therefore useful for illustration. There is a clear sense of house style and links are well established between the different pages of the website. The industry aspect is addressed with the inclusion of the Channel 4 logo and industry information is also included at the bottom of each page. Original images are used throughout the website and there is a clear awareness of the codes and conventions of the chosen sub-genre demonstrated through the use of media language, including iconography and lexis. The homepage includes an original video interviewing one of the key characters, giving background information and introducing elements of the narrative. The written synopsis introduces the narrative and areas of representation that will be explored in the drama, including gender and mental health issues, while also establishing the crime drama sub-genre. This has allowed the student to effectively demonstrate understanding of aspects of the theoretical framework. Extracts from the television documentary, when adults were asked what words they would use to describe teenagers, courtesy of Rachel Wells of Heaton Manor School. Stills from the Deception website courtesy of Sophie Johnston from Varndean College. What else would need to be included in this music video to fulfil the requirements of the brief?
