4 This GCSE Music revision guide is intended to complement the GCSE Music textbook, and is to be used alongside the information and support given by your teacher. It contains the necessary information that you need to know and learn when studying the GCSE course in Music. It is not a teaching guide, but it is a useful support for you to refer to and use, outlining essential information and musical knowledge, with guidance on how to answer certain types of question in the Appraising examination. How will I be assessed? The main focus for this revision guide is the listening and appraising component as this is the area where a revision guide can help you most. The book has been divided into two sections. Section 1 Appraising Chapter 1: The elements of music – to highlight their meaning and reinforce your understanding Chapter 2: Prepared extracts Eduqas Chapter 3: Prepared extracts WJEC (The above chapters reinforce the main features of the prepared extracts, approached through each of the musical elements in turn.) Chapter 4: Aural dictation – includes exercises for you to improve your aural, reading andwriting skills inmusic Chapter 5: Exam-style questions – answers and commentaries; looks at the di erent types of questions and o ers suggestions on exam technique Chapter 6: Musical terms and theory – lists all the terminology you need to be familiar with for assessment Section 2 Composing and performing This section reminds you of the requirements of the examination and outlines approaches that will support you in the preparation of your coursework. Chapter 7: Composing Chapter 8: Performing What do I need to know? There are four areas of study that need to be covered throughout the course: Area of study 1 Musical forms and devices Area of study 2 Music for ensemble Area of study 3 Filmmusic Area of study 4 Popular music During your study of these topics, you will need to consider the musical elements , musical contexts and musical language . You will be exploring a wide variety of music, for sure.
