Question 3 will need an extended response, in which you make judgements and draw conclusions. The sample question is: ‘Music videos reinforce stereotypes of ethnicity.’ How far is this true of the two music videos you have studied? [20] The sample question also states that in In your response, you need to: • Explore representations of ethnicity in both of the music videos you have studied • Refer to relevant media contexts, such as social or cultural • Consider whether you agree or disagree with the statement. There is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answer. The examiner will not have a fixed idea of what you should write, but they will be looking to see if you are able to form your own argument. For example, you might decide that you agree, or disagree, with the statement in the sample question, or that you partially agree with it. Any of these is acceptable as long as you support your points with evidence and write a logical, well-reasoned response. Check that your judgements and conclusions match the evidence. Structuring your response In the exam, create a quick plan that will help you to structure your answer. Again, there is no set way to do this, but you could, for the sample question above: • Discuss each bullet point in turn, or you could consider representations and contexts together • Write about one video then the other, or you could move between the two. You must, however, make sure that you address all of the requirements and draw conclusions.
