Exploring the Sample Assessment Materials: Section B Which theoretical perspectives do you need to apply to the different set products in Section B? Draw lines to link the perspectives to the relevant products. Theoretical perspectives Set products Media language Theoretical perspectives on genre including: • Repetition • Variation • The dynamic nature of genre : How genres develop over time • Hybridity and Intertextuality . Narrative theories including: • Propp’s theory: Character types that fulfil specific roles in the narrative. • Other theories, for example: • Todorov’s theory (equilibrium, disruption and resolution) • Lévi-Strauss’ theory of Binary Oppositions (pairs of opposites that are in conflict). Older music video: ‘Rio’ or ‘Black or White’ Contemporary music videos: ‘Roar’ or ‘Bad Blood’ and ‘Uptown Funk’ or ‘Freedom’ Contemporary artists’ websites and social media pages: Katy Perry or Taylor Swift and Bruno Mars or Pharrell Williams Representation Theoretical perspectives on representation, including: • Selection • Construction • Mediation. Theoretical perspectives on gender and representation, including: • Feminist approaches. Audience Theoretical perspectives on audience, including: • Active and passive audiences. • Audience response and interpretation : You could consider possible readings of the products (preferred, negotiated or oppositional according to Hall’s Reception theory) • Blumler and Katz’s Uses and Gratifications theory : How audiences might select products to fulfil the gratifications of: information; entertainment; personal identity and social interaction. 6.3 Quickfire Revision: Applying theoretical perspectives Question 3 might ask you to write about any of the music videos you have studied and/or the online media you have studied in relation to the contemporary artists. The sample question relates to both of the contemporary music videos, but the exam questions will vary. Any area of media language or representations could be assessed.
