Section A: US film 1961–1990 Question 2 in Section A focuses on a US film made between 1961 and 1990. Firstly, highlight the film you are going to write about. Again, under each question there are valuable hints on ways in which to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding. Answer question 2 in relation to the film produced between 1961 and 1990 from your chosen comparative study films: ⦁ Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) ⦁ Grease (1978) ⦁ Witness (1985) ⦁ Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986) ⦁ E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) 2. (a) Identify one example of cinematography used in your chosen lm. [1] (b) Brie y explain what this example of cinematography typically suggests. [4] (c) Explore how this example of cinematography is used in one sequence from your chosen lm. [10] 2. (a) Here again the need to be specific to your chosen film is important. To score the mark you will need to use the correct terminology in describing the example you choose from your film. Try to remember that cinematography includes any camera shot (relating to its distance, angle or movement) and/or any example of lighting (relating to direction or intensity of lighting). For example, the low angle shot used in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial to show the men who are hunting E.T. in the woods at the beginning of the film. You should take extra care here with your choice of example as you will have to discuss it, and other examples of it, in parts (b) and (c). So don’t pick one that is so rare as there may be no other examples you can remember, and pick one where you are confident about the meaning the director is trying to convey to the audience through its use. Low angle shot from E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial . 290 GCSE Film Studies
