Part 6 Exam skills This is the point when all your hard work is going to be tested! Even though you have revised thoroughly and you feel you know your films well, there are many ways in which you can ensure you get the marks you deserve. This part takes you through each paper and its format. It will give you handy tips that may help you to gain marks and manage your time. It looks at the kind of questions/areas where your knowledge and understanding can be demonstrated and allows you to examine responses written by other students. Component 1: Key developments in US film Section A: US film 1930–1960 Below is an example of the format and type of question you may be asked for this section. Before you start, highlight the film you have studied for this section. Underneath the questions you will find handy tips that will clarify which areas of knowledge and understanding are being tested. Answer question 1 in relation to the film produced between 1930 and 1960 from your chosen comparative study films: ⦁ King Solomon’s Mines (1950) ⦁ Singin’ in the Rain (1952) ⦁ Rear Window (1954) ⦁ Rebel Without a Cause (1955) ⦁ Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956). 1. (a) Identify one genre convention used in your chosen lm. [1] (b) Brie y outline why conventions are used in genre lms. [4] (c) Explore how the convention you have identi ed is used in one sequence from your chosen lm. In your answer, refer to at least one key element of lm (e.g. cinematography, mise-en-scène, editing or sound). [10] 1. (a) Although this question is only a 1 mark question you will have to be specific in your answer. The genre convention will need to be a recognised one, for example setting.
