WJEC/Eduqas GCSE Drama: Designing Drama
FOCUS The method by which lanterns are positioned and focused. ASSESSMENT CHECK You should supervise the rigging of your lighting design. This will help you towards AO2: ‘Apply theatrical skills to realise artistic intentions in live performance.’ DESIGN TIP These rigging notes are for your information as you supervise the process. (You will not be rigging the lights yourself.) This process takes its name from the rig, which, in this case, is the construction of bars from which the lanterns are suspended. Complete the checklist on page 178. Gather all your resources. Check your rigging diagram. Set up your lighting desk. Switch on the dimmer rack. Steps for safe and successful rigging NB: Lanterns should be checked before rigging by a qualified person. NB: Nobody should be underneath the rig when lanterns are being mounted. Check that all climbing equipment can be secured and ‘guarded’. Check that all the lantern attachments, such as barn doors, gels, gobos and the safety bond work properly and are secure. The sequence for rigging lanterns is: 1 Hook over bar and tighten wing nut. 2 Attach safety bond. 3 Point the lantern towards the area you want to light. 4 Adjust shutters and barn doors. 5 Plug in the lantern, wrapping any extra cable loosely around the bar. 34 Chapter 1 Practical Guide to Lighting Design
